One of Europe's Culture Capitals

Once a city of steel and coal mining, now one of the cultural capitals of Europe, Essen is one of Germany’s greenest cities and is home to many historical landmarks such as the Cathedral of Essen and Nikolauskirche, along with the charismatic half-timbered medieval quarters of Kettwig.

The botanical garden of Grugapark has a host of plants and flora, whilst Essen’s historical past is on show through landmarks such as Basilica St Ludgerus, Alte Kirche and the Old Synagogue Essen.

The main shopping area is based around Kettwiger Strasse, within the vicinity is Essen’s medieval Dom containing several priceless collections of artwork. Museum Folkwang features 19th and 20th-century art and several cafés, bars and restaurants line the city’s streets.

In summer you can swim, windsurf, take a boat ride or enjoy a picnic on the banks of Lake Baldeney and the Baldeneysee Seaside Beach. Essen has ice-skating rinks in some areas during winter. Movie Park Germany is also a popular attraction.

Essen Central Station offers direct links to Oberhausen, Dortmund, Cologne, Duisburg, and Dusseldorf. Booking.com has several accommodation options in North Rhine-Westphalia and Essen.

Essen was mostly destroyed in the war.

Essen was mostly destroyed in the war. Everything in the city center is either ugly 50s or even uglier 70s buildings. The shopping district has mostly Döner take-aways and mobile phone shops, public transport grinds to a 30-minute tact after 20h even on the main lines and stops at 23h, cultural offers are sparse (but if you have a car, you can always travel over the always jammed A40 to Düsseldorf, Dortmund or Duisburg … also ugly, but slightly bigger, Düsseldorf even has car sharing providers that none of the other have). Nicer houses are in Essen-Bredeney on the hill-top with the Villa Krupp and in Essen-Werden, where the Folkwang University has a good concert and performance schedule, the Baldeney See is a huge lake and the Zeche Zollverein an interesting mining-related museum with cool tours, and Museum Folkwang has surprisingly many big names for such a poor city. But other than that, avoid Essen at all cost.

Our visit to Essen was prompted by our attendance at a stamp collectors' exhibition at the "Messe". The exhibition halls and facilities are world class. We also visited the excellent art Museum Folkwang, and the new museums at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein (discontinued but preserved coal mine and coke processing plant) as well as the Krupp family mansion, "Villa Hugel". Essen is off the beaten tourist path, which is not at all a bad thing. Public transportation was esy to use with a 24/48 hour pass but the main train station was pretty confusing.

Apartment was great, very clean, and It looks exactly like on the pictures! The location is also great, very close to metro station, 15min away from city center. I highly recommend it, especially for big groups, since there was more than enough space. The only one little things: there is no hairdryer in the apartment

Not much to do in Essen.

Not much to do in Essen. I was there for a security event, so it was a fly-in fly-out for four days. I wanted to have time to visit some historical sights, but nothing within walking distance from the city centre. The town is full of shops, restaurants and bars. But that's pretty much it; I wouldn't recommend it as a place to visit.

Historical Essen was destroyed during WWII so vast majority of the city is quite new with very modern appearance except from some wonderful churches, still one can also find interesting historical monuments here - e.g. Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex (we enjoyed a guide tour for two hours and had a coffee and went here to open swimming pool!), remarkable medieval old town houses in Kettwig (some parts date back to the 14th century!) and huge botanical garden (Botanischer Garten der Universität Duisburg-Essen). This summer (2022) is 8 Euro month ticket valid for all German local trains, so you can travel as much as you like.

The area around main transit station (HBF) is very metropolitan - tiny untidy shops of several cultures to quickly provide food and minor services to a traveller. Very convenient at day, but somewhat uncomfortable during evening and night hours. I was only around there and around Zollverein. Zollverein is an absolutely stunning venue. Consider it as a huge park with decaying remains of an old Gardaland/Disneyland overgrown with vegetation. It's really just remains of a coal processing plant. Note: I was outside only.

We have stayed in this hotel around 8 years ago, and today everything looks the same - as it was opened just yesterday. The hotel is made in traditional German style and there you will find all authentic details. Very nice breakfast and very gentle personal. It is located a bit far away from Essen center, but that is only an advantage. It is located in very quite and cosy district, arount you can find the forest to go for a walk, good restourants near by and small cosy “center” where you can find the shops, CAFE and etc.

The owner and his wife were exceptionally nice:-) Though typical for continental breakfast, the breakfast was good and ample. The room and bathroom were of good size. This hotel is perfect for those traveling by car, looking for hassle free parking. Also, the setting of the hotel in a residential neighborhood is so peaceful and relaxing. As a bonus, an incredible family owned restaurant (Im Wulve Gaststatte) located around the corner just a few blocks away:-)

Location a short-ish walk from the Train station but a chance to see some of Essen on the way. Check in fast and nice staff. Room clean, ‘funky’, free water, good air conditioner, rooftop area worth a look, bar area nice and breakfast very good - top marks to the female member of staff who was working her socks off to keep everything topped up. Also top marks for soundproofing- didn’t hear a thing, not the usual door closing of hotels, not a pin drop! Amazing :-)

The location is perfect for public transport. The subway is just outside the hotel, Altenessen trainstation is one stop by subway or a short walk. For events at the Messe it's ideal. Subway 11 takes you directly there in about 15 minutes or so. The breakfast isn't cheap at 15 Euro, but definitely worth it. The rooms are basic, but clean and neat. Staff is friendly and helpful.

Good location 10-15 mins by foot to the center of Essen, 20 mins car ride to Oberhausen Centro, new room, baby bed service, paid parking spaces, great selection of breakfast, including a pancake machine, TV had HDMI connection & Bluetooth speaker, bathroom was modern, the interior of the room was modern and the hotel had a nice welcoming feel. Excellent price quality ratio.

I was pleasantly surprised by how nice our room was at Luise Hotel considering some of the bad reviews it has. We stayed in Room 1 which was a very large en-suite room and an absolute bargain for only €57. The staff were friendly and there’s a free breakfast included. If you’re looking for cheap basic accommodation near Essen HBF then this place is great.

Modern hotel in a building close to the railway station of Essen, about 5 minutes walk and 10 minutes to the main pedestrian street of the city, from where you can find restaurants and shops. The room was on a high floor with view to the rail lines, but quiet during the night. Good wifi and good breakfast

Great Host, clean house, everything was great here. I don't have anything to say TBH. However, we arrived late compared to our check in time, the host waited for us and opened the door and delivered the key and instructions. I recommend this place to anyone else wants to stay at Essen Germany.

Check-in was simple, without having to go to any desk, just through email. Quite accessible by public transportation, I took a bus from a station near Essen central station around 12 am. The room was clean and neat. Some supermarkets are just in front of the hotel (in the same parking area).

Ideal location for going to the Essen exhibition show. Close to the city centre, too. The staff were friendly and helpful. Nice buffet breakfast. Spacious and comfortable bedroom. This was not 5-star accommodation, but it was perfectly adequate for our needs.
